Spotting the Elusive Tasmanian Devil at Stewarts Bay Lodge

Tucked away on the tranquil edge of the Tasman Peninsula, Stewarts Bay Lodge offers guests more than just breathtaking views and cosy accommodation — it’s also a front-row seat to Tasmania’s incredible wildlife. One of the most exciting and rare visitors you might encounter during your stay? The Tasmanian Devil.

Recognisable by their black fur, white markings, and distinctive screeches, Tasmanian Devils are the world’s largest surviving carnivorous marsupials. Despite their name and fearsome reputation, these animals are actually quite shy and solitary — making any sighting a thrilling and rare experience. At night, they emerge from their dens to forage, scavenge, and sometimes make brief appearances around our lodge grounds.

Recently, our manager had the incredible luck of spotting a devil — caught on camera as it quietly moved through the property. This moment reminded us just how special and wild this part of Tasmania truly is.

While Tasmanian Devils were once found across mainland Australia, today they are unique to Tasmania. Conservation efforts have been vital in protecting them, especially from the devastating Devil Facial Tumour Disease that has affected populations in recent decades.

Tips for Spotting a Tasmanian Devil During Your Stay:

  • Take a quiet evening stroll around the lodge grounds 🌌
  • Stay alert just after sunset — devils are nocturnal
  • Keep your torchlight low and your camera ready 📷
  • Be patient and respectful — these are wild animals in their natural habitat

Experiences like these are part of what makes a stay at Stewarts Bay Lodge unforgettable. Nature, peace, and the chance to encounter Tasmania’s most iconic wildlife — all in one place.
