The Port Arthur Historic Site Walking Trails

Explore heritage, gardens, and coastal views along well-maintained paths.

The Port Arthur Historic Site offers more than just fascinating history — it also features beautifully maintained walking paths set among heritage buildings, gardens, and coastal views.

Guests can explore a network of walking trails that wind through the historic grounds, past ruins, heritage-listed buildings, and open grassy areas. The walks are mostly flat and well-maintained, making them suitable for visitors of all ages and abilities.

One of the highlights is the walk around the waterfront and the harbour cruise area, offering sweeping views across the bay. The Isle of the Dead cruise, included with general admission, adds another layer to the walking experience by combining history with scenic exploration.

The site is large enough to spend several hours wandering at a relaxed pace, stopping to read interpretive signage or join a guided tour. There are plenty of shaded areas and seating spots to rest along the way.

Being just minutes from Stewarts Bay Lodge, guests can easily visit Port Arthur early in the morning or later in the afternoon when it’s quieter, then return to the lodge to relax and reflect on the experience.
