Snake Season
Tasmania has three types of snakes — tiger snakes, copperheads, and white-lipped snakes — and they’re all venomous. They are seen sunning themselves on walking tracks, hanging around under logs, in long grass and under homes.
They are generally very shy creatures and only bite if they feel threatened.
No-one has died of a snake bite in Tasmania since 1977!
Advice if you see a snake
Advice if You See a Snake
If walking in the bush, watch carefully where you are going. Avoid long grass and areas with lots of rocks and sticks. Stewarts Bay Lodge is a bush venue and we do see the occasional snake here – just be aware.
If you see a snake, don’t panic! Stand very still. They do not perceive you as food or a threat and will probably move away or keep moving. If they are lying still, back away very slowly.
Do not approach the snake, try to scare it away, or hit it with anything. This is what causes snake bites.
In the extremely unlikely event that you are bitten by a snake, don’t panic! Snake venom moves through the lymph system and any movement will make the situation worse.
Lie down, stay very still, apply a pressure bandage or some sort of pressure over and around the bite area. Do not apply a torniquet. Get help asap! The emergency number in Australia is 000.
