Enjoy this 10.1-km out-and-back trail near Fortescue, Tasmania. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 3 h 37 min to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and walking, so you’ll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. You’ll need to leave pups at home — dogs aren’t allowed on this trail.
The trail sits in the southeast of the Tasman Peninsula in an area full of sea cliffs, remarkable caves and world heritage sites. This is an absolutely stunning walk with views of Cape Huay, Tasman Island and more.
It can be a long day’s hike as there are lots of stairs along the way, but in the end, the view is worth the hike! The rock stairs on the track are very well maintained, there are 800 steps up to the junction and then 1000 steps down.
If feeling super fit you can continue on to Cape Pillar which includes Mount Fortescue, Fortescue Bay and The Blade, there are camping spots to do multi-day hikes. There is a multitude of interesting spots nearby on the Tasman Peninsula including Port Arthur, Devil’s Kitchen, Tasmans Arch, Eaglehawk Neck and the interesting rock formations of its tessellated pavement.
The trailhead can be accessed via Fortescue Bay Road which is unsealed. Gas barbeques are available at the day-use area near the trailhead. Fortescue Bay camping area has two designated campgrounds; Banksia Campground and Mill Creek Campground. Both campgrounds have untreated water tanks, showers and toilets.
