Steeped in both natural beauty and convict-era history, Eaglehawk Neck is about a 25-minute drive from Stewarts Bay Lodge and well worth a visit. Once a key military checkpoint between Port Arthur and the rest of Tasmania, this narrow isthmus was famously guarded by a line of ferocious dogs known as the “Dog Line” to prevent convict escape. Today, visitors can see a sculpture commemorating this piece of history and explore the small museum nearby.

Eaglehawk Neck is also home to several unique geological wonders, including the Tessellated Pavement, where natural erosion has created an eerie “tiled” effect on the rocks. Nearby is the Pirates Bay Lookout, offering sweeping coastal views that are especially stunning at sunrise.

Whether you’re exploring its historical significance or marvelling at the natural formations, Eaglehawk Neck is a fascinating and picturesque destination.
