Stewarts Bay Lodge is home to many different species of wildlife including the Tasmanian Devil. Most of our wildlife is nocturnal and can be seen throughout the property after dark. Please do not feed the wildlife and be sure to drive slowly. Please also be aware that snakes are occasionally sighted on the property during the Summer months. Please seek advice from reception if concerned.

Wombats

Wombats are sturdy, burrowing marsupials with a distinctive waddling walk and a love for solitude. In Tasmania, the Common Wombat is widespread and can often be spotted near forested areas and open grasslands, especially during the cooler parts of the day—dawn, dusk, and even nighttime.

They create extensive underground burrow systems and are known for their territorial behaviour. At Stewarts Bay Lodge, guests might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one near the edges of the bushland or when exploring nearby trails.

Interesting fact: A wombat’s poo is cube-shaped! This unique trait helps keep their droppings from rolling away, marking their territory effectively. Wombats also have incredibly tough rear ends—evolved to block burrow entrances from predators.

Echidnas

The echidna is one of Australia’s most unique animals, often mistaken for a hedgehog but biologically very different. These spiny, solitary creatures are monotremes—egg-laying mammals—and can be found foraging for ants and termites throughout the Tasman Peninsula. They are most commonly seen in warmer months, especially in spring and early summer.

Guests may encounter echidnas slowly waddling along forest tracks or even beside the road. Despite their spikes, they are non-aggressive and will curl into a ball or dig into the ground when threatened.

Fascinating fact: Echidnas have no teeth! Instead, they use their long, sticky tongue—up to 18 cm long—to lap up insects. They are excellent diggers and can disappear into soft soil surprisingly quickly.

Pademelons

Tasmanian Pademelons are small, stocky marsupials that look like miniature wallabies. They’re most active during the evening and night, and are commonly seen around Stewarts Bay Lodge, particularly near the edge of the bushland or in quiet, grassy areas.

Shy but curious, these gentle creatures feed on grasses and low vegetation and are usually spotted alone or in small groups. Guests often enjoy seeing them hopping quietly around the property at dusk or early morning.

Did you know? Pademelons are endemic to Tasmania and parts of southeastern Australia. Their name comes from the Dharug Aboriginal language. They are an important prey species for native predators, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem.

Birds

The Tasman Peninsula is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with a wide variety of native birds calling the area home. From colourful parrots and honeyeaters to the majestic sea eagles and curious fairy-wrens, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Many species can be seen year-round, but mornings and late afternoons are best for birdwatching.

At Stewarts Bay Lodge, guests often wake to the melodic calls of birds in the surrounding forest. Keep your eyes peeled for the vibrant Green Rosella, the elusive Tawny Frogmouth, or the impressive Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo.

Fun fact: Tasmania is home to 12 endemic bird species found nowhere else in the world, including the Forty-spotted Pardalote—one of Australia’s rarest birds. Whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher or just a curious guest, the variety and beauty of birdlife here is truly remarkable.

Snakes

Tasmania is home to three species of snakes: the Tiger Snake, Lowland Copperhead, and White-lipped Snake. All are venomous, but bites are extremely rare, as snakes are generally shy and prefer to avoid human interaction. These reptiles can often be found basking in the sun on walking tracks or in bushland, particularly during the warmer months from October to March.

Snakes play an important ecological role, helping control rodent and insect populations. While exploring the Tasman Peninsula’s many trails, guests are encouraged to stay on marked paths and wear enclosed footwear. If you see a snake, remain calm, back away slowly, and give it plenty of space to move on.

Did you know? Despite being venomous, Tasmania’s snakes are protected species. It’s illegal to harm or kill them. Their shy nature and important role in the ecosystem make them a fascinating, if sometimes misunderstood, part of our local wildlife.

Your Stay With Us in the Summer Months…

As the warmer months are approaching, we would like to advise you of some important information relating to your safety while staying with us.

Summer is Snake Season in Tasmania

Tasmania is home to three types of snakes: tiger snakes, copperheads, and white-lipped snakes — all of which are venomous. They are often seen sunning themselves on walking tracks, under logs, in long grass, and even under buildings.

They are generally very shy and only bite if they feel threatened. In fact, no one has died of a snake bite in Tasmania since 1977!

Advice If You See a Snake

  • Watch carefully where you walk, especially in bush areas.
  • Avoid long grass and areas with rocks or sticks.
  • Stewarts Bay Lodge is a bush venue and occasional snake sightings are possible – stay alert.

If you see a snake:

  • Don’t panic! Stand very still. Snakes do not see you as food or a threat and will likely move on.
  • If the snake is lying still, back away very slowly.
  • Do NOT approach, scare, or try to hit the snake — this is what usually leads to bites.

If You Are Bitten by a Snake

  • Stay calm – venom spreads through movement.
  • If safe, take a photo of the snake for identification and send it to: reception@stewartsbaylodge.com.au
  • Lie down and stay as still as possible.
  • Apply a pressure bandage around the bite area – do NOT use a tourniquet.
  • Seek medical help as soon as possible. Call emergency services on 000.

If there is an approaching bushfire and evacuation is required, Stewarts Bay Lodge staff will drive around the site giving the evacuation signal: 3 short blasts of a car horn.
