Shipstern Bluff is not for the faint-hearted—but it’s an unforgettable destination for those willing to make the journey. Located about 25 minutes’ drive to the trailhead, followed by a 3–4 hour return walk, this remote and rugged spot is home to one of the most notorious surf breaks in the world. When conditions are right, waves can tower up to nine metres high, attracting elite surfers who are often towed in by jet skis to tackle the monstrous swell.

Even if you’re not chasing waves, the walk to Shipstern Bluff is worth the effort. The trail passes through stunning bushland and dramatic coastal views before arriving at the awe-inspiring bluff. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way. It’s a raw and powerful place—an example of Tasmania’s wild energy at its best.
